The Florida Department of Health has recognized the City as a 2017 Healthy Weight Community Champion. This recognition was earned by implementing best practices in the community to increase physical activity and improve nutrition. Only 98 communities in the state of Florida received this accolade. By promoting healthy food, beverage and physical activity environments, the City continuously exhibits its commitment to helping Doral children and adults make informed choices for a healthier life.
“Encouraging our residents to lead a healthy and active lifestyle has been a priority of mine since the City’s early days when I helped launch the Get Fit Doral program and an ordinance requiring that food and beverages sold in City owned concessions and vending machines meet specific national requirements,” said Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez. “Now that I’m back, I intend to continue focusing on these type of initiatives while identifying innovative opportunities to keep our community well and thriving.”
Other best practice policies that resulted in the City’s recognition includes a Bikeway Network Plan that is being expanded and the Doral Trolley which continues to steadily increase its ridership and has plans for additional routes to Florida International University, among other destinations. The City prides itself in these efforts that create a healthy environment for residents, workforce and visitors.
