Doral Receives State Funds for the New FIU Trolley Route
Doral, FL – Doral has been awarded a grant by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for the new Doral Trolley route to Florida International University (FIU) Trolley Route as a Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Plan Demonstration Project. The grant of $260,000 a year for up to a 3-year period, will cover 50% of the annual FIU Trolley system for the community.
Doral’s submittal was one of the projects the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) Governing Board approved as part of the Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Plan Demonstration as a top priority in Miami-Dade County. This priority is consistent with the goals and objectives of the State’s Public Transit Service Development Program grant cycle to promote new transit demonstration projects statewide. As a result, a countywide comprehensive program of demonstration projects was evaluated by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
“This route to FIU was important to us as it provides the thousands of students, faculty and staff that reside in Doral, a convenient and affordable form of transportation,” stated Mayor Bermudez. “These are the types of mobility solutions that Doral is committed to investing in to help with the regional issue of traffic congestion and something I am personally very avid about as a member of the TPO.”
The Mayor and Council are hopeful that as this route, and other trolley routes mature, the can continue acquiring grant funds and partnerships that can help offset the costs of running this free trolley system for the community.
