  • Avoid Floodwaters: Stay away from standing water, which may be contaminated or contain hidden dangers like sharp debris or live electrical wires.
  • Inspect Your Home for Damage: Carefully check your home for structural damage, gas leaks, and electrical hazards. If you suspect damage, contact professionals for repairs.
  • Stay Informed: Continue to monitor local news and official updates for any ongoing hazards, such as flood warnings or power outages.
  • Do Not Use Wet Electrical Devices: If an electrical appliance has come into contact with water, avoid using it until it has been inspected and deemed safe by a professional.
  • Avoid Downed Power Lines: Stay clear of any downed electrical wires, which may still be live, and report them immediately to the utility company.
  • Be Cautious with Food and Water: Discard perishable food that may have spoiled due to power outages. Only drink water if it has been declared safe by local authorities.
  • Clean Safely: Wear protective gear like gloves and boots when cleaning up debris. Use disinfectants when cleaning areas that may have been exposed to floodwater.
  • Document Damage for Insurance: Take pictures and videos of any damage to your property before cleaning up for insurance claims and reports.
  • Operate Generators Safely: Never run generators indoors or in enclosed spaces to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Keep them outside, away from doors and windows.
  • Take Care of Mental Health: Recovering from a hurricane can be stressful. Reach out for support if needed, and take breaks during clean-up to avoid burnout.
