Preparation for Residents & Businesses

  1. Personal Plan: Review your emergency kit—include 7 days' worth of non-perishable food, water (1 gallon per person per day), and medications (30-day supply). Don’t forget your pets! For a full list, visit the Public Safety page on the City website.
  2. Senior Care: Plan for seniors and family members with disabilities.
  3. Home Safety: Ensure hurricane shutters and hardware are accessible and in working order.
  4. Flood Risks: Avoid driving in flooded areas—turn around, don’t drown. Even shallow water can be dangerous.
  5. Storm Drains: Ensure your HOA or property manager maintains stormwater drainage systems in your community. Remember, “Only Rain Down the Drain.”
  6. Tree Trimming: Trim trees and properly dispose of debris well before hurricane season.
  7. Insurance: Confirm your property is insured and store important documents in a watertight container. Visit Floodsmart.gov for flood insurance information.
  8. Community Info: Contact your HOA for specific guidance in your neighborhood.
  9. Low-Impact Measures: Implement techniques like rain barrels or permeable pavers to reduce stormwater flooding.
  10. City Assistance: The Building Department is available to assist with hurricane-related permits and inspections.

Pre-Storm Activities

  1. Business Owners: Secure outdoor furniture, signs, and storage. Have an employee emergency plan.
  2. Homeowners: Bring outdoor decorations inside and secure backyard items. Never use grills indoors.
  3. Property Maintenance: Inspect and fix damaged fences, roof tiles, and other items that could become dangerous in high winds.

Post-Storm Activities

  1. Power Outages: Treat all intersections as four-way stops if traffic lights are down.
  2. Hiring Contractors: Be cautious of unlicensed contractors. Verify their credentials at MyFloridaLicense.com.
  3. Debris Removal: The City has contractors on standby to clear public roads. HOAs are responsible for private communities.
  4. FPL Information: Call 1-800-4-OUTAGE or visit FPL.com for power updates.
  5. Generator Safety: Never use generators indoors or near windows—carbon monoxide is deadly.
  6. Curfews: If curfews are issued, cooperate with authorities and limit travel.
