Storm Safety Tips

Your safety is paramount, and these hours leading up to the storm are critical. Please follow these important storm tips:

  • Stay Indoors: If possible, remain at home to ensure your safety during the storm.
  • Conserve Water: Reduce water usage during the morning and evening, which are peak times for consumption, especially during heavy rain.
  • Keep Manhole Covers Closed: To prevent flooding from entering the wastewater system and vice versa, ensure manhole covers are secured when streets are flooded.
  • Avoid Flood Waters: Do not drive or walk around road barriers or through large puddles. Hidden debris can pose serious risks. If you encounter a flooded road while driving, remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown. More than half of flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
  • Respect the Power of Water: Just 6 inches of fast-moving floodwater can knock over an adult, while 12 inches can carry away a small car. Stay cautious around rushing water.
  • Stay Away from Downed Power Lines: Electrocution is a significant risk during floods. Electrical current can travel through water. Report downed power lines immediately to Florida Power and Light at 305-442-8770.
  • Avoid Standing Water: Do not play in stagnant water, as it can be contaminated.
  • Safety with Electrical Appliances: Never touch electric appliances if you are wet or standing in water.

Stay tuned for further updates, and please take all necessary precautions. Your safety is our top priority as we navigate Hurricane Milton together.
