More Trees Coming to Doral with Neat Streets Grant
Doral, FL – For a second time, the City of Doral was awarded a Street Tree Matching Grant by Neat Streets Miami for its City Street Tree Restoration Project in the amount of $24,500. In its third year, Neat Streets Miami’s street tree program awarded 14 organizations matching grants to advance the Million Trees Miami initiative, a community-wide effort to expand Miami-Dade County’s tree canopy and reach a million trees by 2020.
“Trees in the community are essential to increase our quality of life, wellness and even property values,” said Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez. “I am proud to be partnering with organizations that share in our vision, like Neat Streets Miami, to help keep our community pride strong and our City beautiful.”
With this grant, the City will plant 69 trees in three different species (Live Oaks, Crape Myrtles, and Mahogany) to provide shade and beautify their community. Furthermore, the cooling of the ROW reduces the heat effect in transit and enhances the aesthetic as the drivers pass by. Doral is committed to increasing the tree canopy, continuously seeking public and private partnerships to grow the tree planting and recuperate the lost canopy due to last year’s Hurricane Irma.
“The Street Tree Matching Grant allows Miami-Dade County to leverage its funds strategically in order to plant trees along our streets through partnerships with our municipalities and community organizations,” said Miami-Dade County District 9 Commissioner Dennis C. Moss. “By incentivizing our partners to plant in underserved neighborhoods with low tree canopy, we are able to plant in neighborhoods that need these trees the most.”
These programs help establish a frame work enhancing the management of planting and tree care; educating about the importance of sustainable tree management and engaging organizations in advancing urban forestry. It also showcases the pride residents feel about where they live and work.
Made possible through the County’s Tree Trust Fund, preference was given to areas with low tree canopy, in an attempt to achieve at least a twenty percent tree canopy coverage (Miami-Dade County’s average) in all neighborhoods. The 2018 grant funding totals $250,000, a 20 percent increase from last year.

Launched by Neat Streets Miami, the Million Trees Miami Campaign is a community-wide effort to plant one million trees by 2020 in order to achieve a 30 percent tree canopy cover for Miami-Dade County.
