New transportation corridor and state-of-the-art UHealth center coming to Doral
Today, Downtown Doral, the City of Doral, Miami-Dade County, and UHealth - the University of Miami Health System joined forces to announce the latest health, wellness and transportation advancements coming to South Florida residents. The event was
attended by local leaders including Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, City of Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez, University of Miami President Dr. Julio Frenk, UHealth Chief Operating Officer Dr. Dipen Parekh, and Codina Partners Executive
Chairman Armando Codina.
First, Miami-Dade County and the City of Doral unveiled details around new, accessible transportation solutions coming to the local area. Miami-Dade County’s Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) is working towards a design-build
project which will widen NW 84th Avenue-- from NW 58th Street to NW 74th Street in Doral-- to accommodate new bus-only lanes that will be utilized by the City of Doral trolley and other buses. The road will expand from two lanes to four lanes,
with the two additional lanes serving as the bus-only lanes. The project's scope includes new drainage, signage, marking, and street lighting and represents a total investment of $7.7 million.
“World-class destinations boast world-class public transit,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “By working with strong cities like Doral and anchor institutions like the University of Miami, we’ll be able to expand existing service
and connect more riders to more of Miami-Dade County.”
In the coming months, the City of Doral will establish a trolley route that will allow for mobility between Doral’s City Hall in Downtown Doral and the DTPW’s Palmetto Station on NW 74th Street. Codina Partners, the developers of Downtown Doral,
are also investing in the project with the donation of two trolleys.
In addition, the announcement of the 150,000-square-foot UHealth facility at Downtown Doral took place at the event. The new medical center will greatly benefit from the dedicated trolley lane, which will be able to transport future employees
and patients alike to and from the facility. Creating several hundred new jobs, the state-of-the-art medical center will allow Doral to advance as a western hub for UHealth’s world-class healthcare while connecting more residents and visitors
to the community’s amenities than ever before. New details about the facility were announced today, including the facility’s landscape, medical concentrations and more. At six stories, this center will be home to 33 exam rooms, eight operating
rooms and three endoscopy suites. This facility will also bolster 11 different medical specialties, including cancer care from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, the only nationally ranked cancer center in South Florida that has also earned
designation from the National Cancer Institute; advanced vision care from the number one ranked eye hospital in the country, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute; top-notch neurology care from the health system’s nationally ranked program; urological care
from the Desai Sethi Urology Institute; and a host of other specialties at the vanguard of medicine, including cardiology, gastroenterology and hepatology, internal medicine orthopedics, gynecology, imaging, and more.
“This new facility will allow UHealth to bring preeminent care to the rapidly growing Doral community of more than 81,000 residents and will serve as a western hub for our expanding network of ambulatory services,” said Dr. Frenk. “This new facility
builds upon the longstanding partnerships that the University has in the South Florida community.”
