ODOR CONTROL UPDATE: Mayor Bermudez urges Miami-Dade County Not to Renew Lease Agreement

The City of Doral continues to prioritize the welfare of the community, exploring  viable solutions that may alleviate the odor issue in the city. As such, Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez, with the support of the City Council,  sent letters to Miami-Dade County urging them not to extend the lease agreement with the Covanta facility. The facility lease agreement is scheduled to expire on October 31, 2023. This course of action has been taken by City leadership in efforts to improve the quality of life of Doral residents which is negatively impacted by the odors that this facility causes. With Waste Management’s Okeechobee Landfill already serving as a facility that Miami-Dade County delivers municipal solid waste to, the City proposes that the waste currently taken to the Covanta facility be relocated to the Okeechobee facility. That option would improve the lives of Doral residents while saving Miami-Dade County hundreds of millions of dollars. Mayor Bermudez and the City Council are committed to doing whatever is possible to resolving this issue for the residents.
