Polystyrene Banned in All Doral Parks Starting July 1, 2024

Dear Doral Community,

We are excited to share important news in our ongoing efforts to protect the environment and preserve local wildlife. Starting July 1, 2024, all Styrofoam products will be banned in City of Doral parks, as part of our commitment to sustainability under Ordinance No. 2024-13.

Why Is Polystyrene Being Banned?

Polystyrene, known to many as Styrofoam, is commonly used in disposable items like cutlery, cups, plates, and food containers. While convenient, polystyrene poses serious environmental and health risks, such as:

  • Environmental Pollution: Polystyrene does not biodegrade and can persist in the environment for hundreds of years, contributing to litter and pollution.
  • Wildlife Hazards: Animals can mistake polystyrene for food, leading to ingestion and potential harm or death.
  • Chemical Contamination: Polystyrene can leach harmful chemicals into food and beverages, posing health risks to humans.
  • Long-Term Waste: The persistence of polystyrene waste adds to landfill volumes and pollution.

Affected Items

Effective July 1, the following polystyrene products will no longer be permitted in Doral parks:
  • Cups
  • Plates
  • Coolers
  • Trays
  • Clamshell containers
  • All other Styrofoam products
Sustainable Alternatives

We encourage everyone to switch to environmentally friendly alternatives. Biodegradable options include:
  • Uncoated and coated paper products for plates, cups, and food containers.
  • Compostable plant fiber products made from renewable resources like sugarcane, bamboo, and palm.
