Solid Waste Collection Fee Increase Going to Second Reading on September 7th

Doral, FL - On July 6, 2017, the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners (Board) approved an ordinance on first reading which will increase the Residential Waste Collection Fee for service area customers. The ordinance originally requested a fee increase of $19 for most of the 340,000 residential service customers in order to maintain the current level of service the Department of Solid Waste Management (Department) provides. The proposed ordinance was subsequently amended by the Board to $25, which is the equivalent of $2.08 per month, in order to allocate additional resources to enable the Department to address illegal dumping in our community.

As a result of the ordinance passing on first reading, residents in our service area will begin to receive a “Notice of Proposed Non-Ad Valorem Assessment” during the week of July 24th. This notice is required by State statute to notify customers of the proposed increase to the Residential Waste Collection Fee. The notice also indicates that a public hearing for the proposed fee will be held on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at 9:30am in the Miami-Dade County Commission Chambers at the Stephen P. Clark Government Center. We welcome your support and encourage you to attend the Public Hearing if you wish to speak on the proposed fee increase prior to the Board taking final action.

While the cost of doing business has gone up over the years, the Residential Waste Collection fee has not been increased since 2006. This fee increase is absolutely essential to maintain the current level of service the Department provides. The proposed ordinance, attached to this e-mail, Page 2, outlines potential cuts to the Department’s services if this fee is not passed.

The Department of Solid Waste Management remains committed to the mission of providing our customers with excellent waste collection, recycling and disposal services that protect, preserve and improve our environment and the quality of life in our community.
