Over 50 years in the making. In 1961, MDX's oldest expressway SR 112, then known as the 36th Street Tollway now Airport Expressway, was opened to traffic.
It was soon followed in 1965 by SR 836 known as the Fourteenth Street East-West Expressway connecting the Palmetto Expressway to downtown Miami. In 1974, when the construction of its first extension to Florida's Turnpike was completed, its name was changed to the SR 836/Dolphin Expressway to commemorate the success of the Miami Dolphins after an undefeated season and back-to-back Super Bowl wins.
