City Receives Federal Grant for Communication
and Police Radio Modernization Technology Project

Doral, FL – On May 31, 2024, U.S. Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart proudly presented a check in the amount of $2,000,000 to the City of Doral that will help fund an upgrade and modernization to the Doral Police Department’s (DPD) current police radios and allow officers access to the next generation in technology.

Mayor Christi Fraga, Vice Mayor Oscar Puig-Corve, Councilman Rafael Pineyro, Councilwoman Maureen Porras, and Councilwoman Digana Cabral, joined Chief Edwin Lopez and DPD Staff in accepting this pivotal federal grant that will aid in enhancing public safety initiates in the community. The City is grateful for Congressman Diaz-Balart’s leadership and support in acquiring this important grant.

Communication is essential and critical to police officers responding to emergency calls for service. When members of the community dial 9-1-1 in the event of a life-threatening emergency, police officers receive critical information via their police radios and must be able to provide their findings and the possibility of requesting additional resources to other officers and dispatchers. DPD Communication & Police Radio Modernization Technology Project, will provide officers an invaluable safety resource that is mutually beneficial for our officers as well as our residents, businesses, and visitors.

The upgrade to the APX NEXT radio system will allow DPD police officers to maintain contact with the Doral Emergency Operations Center, communications center, and Real-Time Operations Center (RTOC) and the ability to integrate with the Miami-Dade Police

Department and other mutual aid police departments, enabling police officers access to criminal record data base, dispatch systems and vital information while responding to non-emergency and emergency incidents.

This new technology also offers advanced capabilities to help police officers by providing the ability to travel outside the usual radio networks/coverage areas without interruption, built-in mapping and tracking via GPS to assist in the tracking of officers during emergency situations and provide other capabilities that can be seamlessly added as the agency’s needs evolve.
